Councillor Philip Bennion

What motivated you to become a councillor?

I had successfully challenged the local plan whilst Parish Chair and also worked with County officers regarding bus services, so made a more concerted effort to get elected at my 4th attempt.

Background outside the council

Arable Farmer at Haunton Manor Farm with diversified interests including accommodation and renewables. Former researcher in agricultural science with PhD in plant breeding. I also spent some time as MEP for the West Midlands. I am currently Vice President of Liberal International, which involves coordinating between liberal political parties worldwide, including many in government. Recent issues have been support for Ukraine and the impact of disrupted grain and fertiliser supplies. I also represent the organisation from time to time at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where we have speaking rights.

Hobbies or interests

International relations, independent travel, cricket (former club player) and theatre/opera.
